Chamber Recommends Greater Waterfront Access
A Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce report to the harbor's two city councils urges pedestrian access to the area's colorful waterfronts.  The Chamber strongly urged open space at the new Portland cruise ship terminal. 

Maine DEP Tests New Portland Harbor Oil Containment Boom,
A new 800-foot oil containment boom will protect Portland Harbor's Back Cove from the ravages of a major oil spill.  Three permanent moorings spotted at the Cove's entrance ensure rapid deployment the Maine Department of Environmental Protection $140,000 floating structure.

Steamboat Replicas Scheduled for  2001  Portland  Visits 

 Delta Queen Steamboat Company has scheduled five overnight visits for its new Cape May Light and Cape Cod Light cruise vessels.  Evoking  coastal passenger vessels of a century ago,  Delta Queen's new vessels will enter the burgeoning New England luxury cruise boat competition.   The 300-foot vessels, powered by diesel electric engines, will steam at 15 knots.   Three hundred passengers will be accommodated on five decks in period decor cabins, saloons and dining rooms
 
 

 

Portland Memorial Stone Honors Heroic WW II Merchant Seamen 

Veterans from Britain, Russia and the U.S. gathered in Portland's Fort Allen Park to unveil a memorial stone honoring the 3000 merchant seamen lost on  hazardous WW II Arctic Campaign convoys to and from Russia.


Big changes ahead for the Port of Portland

A major reshuffling of Portland's cargo and passenger terminals is planned by the Portland Department of Transportation. In a meeting with ship captains and engineers of the Portland Marine Society, Director Jeffrey W.
