Wreck of Steamer Portland discovered by NOAA Researchers

Sophisticated side scanning sonar has located the 104 year old wreck of the Portland, Maine to Boston steamer "Portland.". To keep the site safe from treasure hunters, NOAA scientists disclosed that wreckage was found somewhere on Stellewagen Bank , 40 miles seaward of Boston. The entire bank is classified as a National Marine Sanctuary.

In winter gale on Nov. 26, 1898 the Portland, Maine to Boston steamer, "Portland" sank with no survivors from her crew and 192 passengers . She was sighted battling the storm by passing skippers from as far north as Gloucester to Cape Cod 60 miles to the south. Her resting place on Stellwagen Bank remained a mystery until discovered on August 2002 by NOAA researchers. High Resolution Image
