Portland Harbor Museum Family Maritime Heritage Day


Schedule

August 16, 7:30-5 pm

The Portland Harbor Museum Annual Canoe and Kayak Race will begin at 9 am, but check in will be open at 7:30. The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Rotary will be on the premises serving food ALL DAY. The race will begin and end at Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, and will take place from 9 to approximately 10:30 am. At that time, the parade of sail for the MS Regatta will occur, and spectators can see it from the museum grounds. The Portland Harbor Museum will be open at 10 am, and our Maritime Heritage Family Day events will begin at 1 pm. These are listed below.

From 1 pm - 5 pm the following activities will be available:

1. Face Painting (nautical items)
2. Pin the claw on the lobster game
3. Making Sailor's Valentines
4. Raising a sail and tying a cleat knot

For Older Children (ages 8-14)
1. Making Sailor's Valentines
2. Signaling with Nautical flags
3. Knot Boards
4. Basic Navigation

6. Friends of Casco Bay - water monitoring activity FOCB

For Adults
1. Walking tour of Fort Preble (1:00 and 3:00)
2. Walking tour of Liberty Ship Memorial & Bug Light (2:00 and 4:00)*
3. Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse tours (Children 12 & up)

For Everyone
1. Singing and talking about Sea Chanteys (4:00-5:00 pm)
2. Open house at the museum
3. Inflatable Educational Whale display Children's Museum
4. Marine Animal Rescue Animal Rescue Group
5. Multiple Sclerosis Society Education Booth MS Society
6. Coast Guard Boat Safety Exhibit (Unconfirmed) U.S. Coast Guard

Admission
Museum Members: $5 for children up to age 14 and $7 for adults
Non-museum Members: $7 for children up to age 14 and $9 for adults

* There will be a short and long walk.
