To the Islands: Past & Present
An Evening with Jim Millinger
Historian Jim Millinger will present an illustrated lecture entitled, To the Islands: Past & Present at Portland Harbor Museum on Wednesday, July 16 at 7:00pm. In his talk, Millinger will offer a detailed look at transportation to and from the Casco Bay Islands. From the white steamboats of the “good old days” to the “carnival colored” diesel boats of the present, these vessels have served the mainland and islands by carrying freight, mail, residents and tourists for over one hundred years.
Jim Millinger’s background allows him to approach his subject from a unique perspective because he has both taught in the academic setting and lived the seafaring life. He received his undergraduate degree in history from Princeton University. He received his master’s degree from U-C Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in Chinese History from Yale University. He has taught Chinese history at universities on the east and west coasts. He taught maritime history, marine policy, and Literature of the Sea Voyage as part of the Sea Education Association’s college program. He teaches Literature of the Sea Voyage for the Maine Humanities Council.
Jim Millinger first came to know the harbor during his college summers as a Captain for Casco Bay Lines. He also served as a commissioned officer on active duty with the US Naval Reserves in the Western Pacific. He holds a Master Mariner’s license in steam, motor, and auxiliary sail. He has served as a quarter-time skipper on the vessels of the Chebeague Transportation Company. He lives on Chebeague where he writes local maritime history.
The museum’s 2008 lecture series is sponsored in part by the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust. This event is free for museum members and $5 for non-members. No advance reservations are required.
